ON THE SATURDAYS OF SOULS…
“God alone knows the future,” said the Monk Vassian, but we should pray for the dead. They are truly our advocates. We request the canonized Saints to implore the mercy of God for us. But there are many unknown saints who may help us. It is a good and honorable things to pray for the dead.”  (From the Serbian Gerontikon) Indeed, it is our Christian responsibility to remember the departed in our prayers. Such prayer is a sign of our love for the Church Triumphant — those who have entered the heavenly Kingdom. We, the Church Militant, who remain on the earth for now, are bound and connected to those who have gone before us marked with the sign of faith. This is what it means to be a part of the Communion of Saints.  Make every effort to come to Divine Liturgy on the Saturdays of Souls.

“It is necessary for a Christian to fast, in order to clear his mind, to rouse and develop his feelings, and to stimulate his will to useful activity. These three human capabilities we darken and stifle above all by ‘filling one’s stomach, by drunkenness, and through the cares of this life’ (Lk. 21:34).”

(St. John of Kronstadt, My Life in Christ)
