The entire St. George parish welcomes Fr. Peter Thornberg, who on Sunday, June 16, 2024 officiated his first Divine Liturgy as our new Proistamenos, along with his wife Presvytera Katherine and their daughter Sophia.

Christ is Risen! Truly He is Risen! I am pleased to convey to you and to the entire St. George community that we are informed by His Eminence Metropolitan Apostolos that he has appointed Reverend Economou Peter J. Thornberg, Proistamenos at St. Sophia Greek Orthodox Church in Jeffersonville, PA, a Philadelphia suburb, to succeed Father Dimitrios Antokas as Proistamenos at St. George. Father Peter is a native Washingtonian, born and raised in the parish of Sts. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church. He is married to Presvytera Katherine, and they have a daughter Sophia. Father Peter holds his Bachelor of Science degree in biology from the University of Maryland at College Park (1995) and his Master of Divinity degree from the Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology (2002). Father Peter started his ministry in the Orthodox Church as a pastoral assistant at the Annunciation Cathedral in Baltimore, MD. After two years of lay ministry, FatherPeter was ordained to the Diaconate in November 2004 and to the Holy Priesthood in June 2005. On October 1, 2006, Father Peter was assigned as the Proistamenos of the St. Sophia Community. Upon the opening of the new house of worship in April 2012, Father Peter was given the rank of Economos. Father Peter serves as the interim Director of Youth and Young Adult Ministry for the Metropolis of New Jersey as well as the Assistant Commissioner for the Delaware Valley Youth Commission. He also holds the office of Metropolis of New Jersey Clergy Brotherhood to the Archdiocesan Presbyters Council. In the days ahead, we will provide additional information regarding Father Peter’s imminent move to our community. Please join Father Dimitrios and Presvytera Maria, and the entire St. George community, in welcoming Father Peter, Presvytera Katherine and their daughter to Sophia with open, loving, and Orthodox Christian arms in the warm and spiritual tradition of St. George.
