ADULT RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

The Human Person in a Consumer Culture

We live in a consumer culture. Businesses gather and sell data and information about us to target us as consumers. We are increasingly treated more like consumers than persons. The Christmas season for many has become nothing more than frenzied consumerism. This week we will continue our discussion about the nature of the human person in the context of consumer culture. We will compare and contrast the language of consuming used in our Liturgy and throughout the Bible with modern notions of consuming and how this relates to growth as human persons.

PHILOPTOCHOS

Join us for a Philoptochos Christmas Social on December 13th at Urban Winery in Silver Spring. You can purchase your ticket of $50 by emailing us at StGPhiloptchos1019@gmail.com or find us during fellowship hour on Sunday's. We are preparing gifts for over 120 residents of three Interfaith Works Emergency Centers and we are collecting $25 gift cards from Target, Walmart, Giant or Safeway Gift Card for each of the residents. Please bring your gift card donation during fellowship hour on Sunday.

SUNDAY SCHOOL

On Sunday December 4th, the 8-12 grade students will have the opportunity to listen to a presentation from the Mission Team work at the Appalachia and receive information on the upcoming Oratorical Festival, discuss the topics and ways to prepare for the event.

Christmas experience Ornament Contest

The Sunday School Christmas Tree theme this year will be “ What a wonderful Life”. Students are invited to make and bring ornaments within the theme (little bells, angel wings, angels) and write anonymous heartfelt messages for friends and family to brighten their holiday with a prayer. The winner of the ornament contest will be acknowledged with a prize by Father Dimitrios.

Christmas Bulletin Drawing Contest

A call to all our great little or not so little artists!

Use the traditional Orthodox Nativity scene icons and write your icon to decorate the Saint George’s Christmas bulletin.

The artist of the icon selected will get a prize from Father Dimitrios and a check of $200 will be sent to an Orthodox charity/mission of their choice.
